Skwácháýs (False Creek) is a land-based zine revealing some of the erased stories base on the land which I reside on. The title of the zine is how the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) refers to the area which I currently reside on , meaning “where water is drawn down into a hole, water spring, or water coming up from ground beneath.” The current name of the area is False Creek, originating from an explorer that mistaken the inlet as a creek. Upon the discovery of the history of the different names, I am surprised at how names can erase history and an indication of power.
